Helena Schmelich

Facility Operations Manager

I have worked in the Leisure industry for over ten years starting out as a personal trainer and teaching group exercise classes. I then worked my way into management and have never looked back.

I believe that having a strong relationship and communication with management and members is key to running a successful friendly centre.

I am excited for the challenge at the Portland Centre and look forward to making this centre a happy, welcoming community hub.

Matt Simpson

Acting Facility Operations Manager

My name is Matt Simpson and I have worked in the leisure industry for the last 12 years. I bring vast experience to my new role as Operations Officer at The Portland Centre.

My career started as a Football Coach around Rushcliffe Leisure Centre’s before moving onto the Village Hotel as a Gym Instructor which led to positions as Assistant Leisure Manager at The Nottingham Belfry Hotel and more recently Leisure & Spa Manager at Double Tree by Hilton in Sheffield.

I really enjoy keeping myself fit by playing football for my local team and taking part in events such as road cycling, duathlons and running. My proudest moment was completing over 250 miles in some fantastic events raising money for The Guide Dogs charity in 2012.

Jean Bly

Receptionist

My leisure journey started in the 80’s when I joined a lifesaving club. By the early 90’s I was a swimming teacher and a trainer assessor. I taught school swimming and trained lifeguards. After a decade of teaching I joined Portland Leisure Centre as a Centre Attendant in 2000. I went on to work at Clifton Leisure and Victoria Leisure Centre. I left the council in 2012. A near full circle brings me back as a receptionist at Portland Centre in 2014.

Mark Tiling

Acting Operations Officer

Growing up I have developed a real passion for Sports and Fitness.

I have achieved various qualifications within the Sports and Fitness industry. These include subjects like Sports development, nutrition, physiology and coaching. I am also a qualified personal trainer.

Feel free to approach me to have a chat, or provide any information or fitness advice. I’m here to help.

My favourite sport is Badminton. I’ve played this since I was seven and have represented the county at under 17s. I play in the Nottinghamshire league, currently with my club in Division 1. I also enjoy running, training in the gym and participating in spinning classes.

I am extremely excited about working in a leisure centre, where health and fitness and sport are everyone’s priority. I have always encouraged others to be as active as possible.

I think participating in Sport and Fitness should be available to everyone, it should be challenging, but most of all enjoyable.

Anthony Atkinson-Want

Multi Purpose Centre Attendant

Throughout my life I have always been involved in Sports. I have always worked to help others enjoy sports and increase participation.

Before I started working here, I worked at a family law company part time doing reception and admin. Meanwhile I attended Central College Nottingham where I studied Sports and Media, as well as coaching, which led to two life changing trips to Cape Town, South Africa. Whilst I was there I coached children football and rugby within the townships and in derelict areas.

I would say I am an approachable person who is easy to talk to and always willing to help. I like to learn new skills and progress areas that I already have. In my spare time, I like to participate in Football and spend time with friends and family.
